Notes on Hugh and Mary [1812] Shevlin Family
Hugh died in Ireland. He was probably a brother of Charles and Daniel of Hunter.
Mary and five of her children emigrated to the United States, sailing from Londonderry to St. John, New Brunswick, Canada on the J.J. Cooke Ship Barbara in 1851. The "Shivlen" family members, listed in apparent order of age, are: Mary, Charles, Sally, Peter (12), Catherine (9), and John (7). The address of the family is given as Mountcharles, which is in Donegal.

Mary, widow born Ireland, died November 2, 1898, at age 94. She resided in Hunter 33 years and in the U.S. for 37 years. Cause of death cerebral embolism. Buried in Ashland Cemetery. Parents James Doran and Sarah McGoily.
[Most of the above are published on the web in Random Births, Deaths, and Marriages in the Town of Hunter, compiled by Joan Rogan Brower, 1996. The years in Hunter and in the U.S. are in notes given to me by Joan Brower in 2003.]
The above record suggests 1804 as the year of birth, but no Mary of that description is found in the census records.
In most of the census records, Peter's age seems to be understated. The 1860 census and passenger list agree that he was born about 1838.
The 1860 census record shows Mary living with Charles, Peter, Catharine, and John in New York City. The names and ages of her children clearly correspond to the passenger list.
In the 1860 census, John is listed as a lithographer and the death certificate of John J. Shevlin of New York City [1893, certificate 22365] also shows him to be a lithographer. The census record implies he was born about 1844. The death certificate suggests that he was born about 1845.
Mary is listed in the New York City directory of 1857, p. 758, as the widow of Hugh Shevlin. Her address is given as 88 Willett.
